Their uniforms were authentic reproductions of period dress. The Fifth Maine took its name from an actual regiment raised on Peaks Island during the Civil War - the regimental hall is still in use there and can be reached here.
The relationship between this corps and others ("on the peninsula") is not known. We can assume it was a healthy competitive mix as often happens between kids who compete agains each other - but also share much the same experience of work and fun.
At first glance one might think this corps was the Deering Defenders, due to the stripe on the right of the tunic.
However the Fifth Maine logo is clear on the bass drums and the "Trooper" style flag unis suggest - along with the date, (July 18, 1971) - that this was at the Manning Bowl in Lynn and the corps had not yet gotten its distinctive uniform look.
A lot of drums - not so many horns - some things have not changed.
